Beneath The Waves "The Crew" Mentorship program

Beneath the waves or "BTW" is a nonprofit ocean conservation organization that believes you don't have to be a Doctoral scientist or have to of done 10+ years of related work to have a good idea. Instead they believe that people just need an avenue to start being a part of the solution in our incredibly complicated environmental crisis. The program focuses on networking. Below is a video explaining BTW and its efforts.

BE CLUB PRESIDENT

As a biosystems engineering student, I noticed the ways BE both provided for and overlooked needs of our students. I ran for president in order to address issues concerning program understanding, available benefits, student development and self realization especially concerning research aspirations and practical employment opportunities. This semester senior and junior students have met with underclassmen through in class presentations, outreach and service events, and club meetings in order to provide support for personal success for our major's students.

FOSSIL FREE FRIDAYS

After being education on the thermodynamics of climate change, I decided that I wanted to make others aware of the simplicity and severity of the politically hot topic. Growing up my family widely criticized the then global warming as a scare tactic of liberal politics as representatives and presidential nominees took stances based off of economic and political affiliations. However, regardless of affiliation, people should be made aware of the science behind climate change and other environmental issues in order to make educated decisions for themselves. Every Friday this semester BE club members and I have tabled with a poster displaying a global thermal energy balance in order to have insightful conversation with fellow students in Bracket Hall on campus. This outreach program has helped other BE club members begin to form actions of their own that will be implemented in the semester to come.

MUSIC COMPOSITION

When I was a kid, my mom tells me of how I was always singing some song and dancing along. In middle school I was first chair in the tuba section of the band and part of an elite jazz chorus group for my school, performing often for public events. Currently I've begun writing music which has provided me a way to express myself outside of solving problems and the everyday grind of my studies in engineering. It helps me grow through self reflection and mindfulness as I express my feelings through rhythm and song. Next semester I plan on recording two EP's in my free time with a musician collective I have formed here at Clemson.

FCA

In my freshman, sophomore, and junior year I have been on community service mission trips with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) - Clemson to cities around America and abroad. These sites have ranged from a Costa Rica sexual slavery protection program’s safehouses to nonprofit building remodeling, and even to people’s homes. For FCA, I have also been the leader of the welcome team encouraging my team and the FCA leadership team to create environments attractive to diverse cultures as well as environments to get attendees out of their comfort zones in order to create a more cohesive community. With members of FCA, I led a small group helping underclassmen through vulnerable situations through mindfulness and self care while they developed their beliefs and passions for the world and God.

Resident Assistant

At Clemson University I had the opportunity to be a Residential Assistant. Although in this position I hosted events to bring about cultural and educational growth for incoming freshman boys while creating a cohesive and respectful community on my hall, this job really required me to be a friend to my residents. A selfless one at that. There were countless late nights finding residents struggling with the new found stress of college and being on their own. Each resident coped with this in their own way and often times just needed someone to just sit and listen to them. To this day I still meet with and see residents that I had become close with my sophomore year, and am so proud to see what they have become. To read more about my interest, my CV can be found below.
